Abstract: This paper analyzes the social function of the school and the challenges of school management in the face of increasing demands for results in external evaluations and rising violence in educational institutions. The objective is to examine, in light of the frameworks of Democratic Management and Public School and Historical-Critical Pedagogy, how democratic management can constitute a qualified mediation in the dialogue between school and community, strengthening mechanisms of participation and reaffirming the primary function of the school institution. Methodologically, this is a qualitative study, based on bibliographic research and theoretical-critical analysis of the transformations in the organization of the State and their impacts on management and educational work. We focus our attention on the democratization of school management as a direction for overcoming violence and for the recovery and valorization of the school institution. It is observed that the broadening of the school's functions results in an emptying of its primary function. It is concluded that democratic management should act as a strategic mediation for the restoration of the social function of the school, promoting the effective participation of the community and strengthening education as a tool for overcoming violence and achieving human emancipation.
