Abstract: Introduction. Orthopedic trauma accounts for more than 50% of hospitalizations and is a cause of overcrowding in urgent and/or emergencies. Often associated with high-energy trauma, which can lead to immediate or late complications. Returning to the hospital after discharge may be associated with factors ranging from the immediate post-operative period to the care required during outpatient follow-up. Objective. To analyze the association between predictive factors of infection and postoperative complications in an adult trauma ward in Recife. Method. A quantitative, cross-sectional analytical study was carried out from March to May 2025, after approval by the research ethics committee under CAAE nº 86896425.0.0000.5200 of Hospital Otávio de Freitas. The sample was made up of individuals admitted to the adult trauma ward, of both sexes, being included because they were over 18 years old, had a confirmed diagnosis of infection through complementary exams and had undergone orthopedic surgical intervention in that hospital and were excluded if they had a refracture in the same segment and had not returned from the post-operative period. Anthropometric, socio-demographic and clinical data were collected using a form prepared by the researchers. The data was displayed in Microsoft Excel 2010 tables and subsequently analyzed. Results. 62 individuals, 75% male, whose average age was 41.48 (± 14.97) years, average weight of 78.44 (± 14.45) kg, average height of 1.67 (± 1.44) meters and average BMI of 27.78 (± 5.18). 62.3% were residents of the metropolitan region and 68.3% were mixed race. 28.33% presented a motorcycle accident as the trauma mechanism, with 66.7% affecting the lower limbs and 61.6% reported having undergone adequate antibiotic therapy. 14.4% had complications in less than 3 months, of which 19.2% did not undergo new surgery. The association between postoperative complications and factors predictive of infection was considered weak, but the intra-sample association was considered moderate. Final considerations. Monitoring the individual from hospital discharge to outpatient follow-up is important to reduce the frequency of complications. The association between postoperative complications and factors predictive of infection was considered weak, but the intra-sample association was considered moderate.
