Abstract: Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH) is a multifactorial clinical condition considered a serious public health problem due to low control rates and complications that lead to high medical and social costs. This research aimed to understand hospitalizations for systemic arterial hypertension in Maranhão between 2019 and 2023. This is an ecological study with a quantitative approach, developed based on secondary data regarding hospitalizations for systemic arterial hypertension in Maranhão, extracted from the Hospital Information Systems (SIH). During this period, there were 34,115 hospitalizations for SAH. The peak of hospitalizations occurred in 2019, followed by a decline in 2020, an increase over the next two years, and a new decline in 2023. The regions of Maranhão with the highest percentage of hospitalizations for SAH were Zé Doca (11.6%), São João dos Patos (10.8%), Pinheiro (9.4%), and Viana (9.7%). Regarding deaths, the prominent cities are Zé Doca (14.8%), Pedreiras (12.7%), Itapecuru Mirim (9.0%), and São João dos Patos (8.5%). As for the mortality rate for systemic arterial hypertension in Maranhão, there was an increase from 2019 to 2023. The regions with the longest length of stay were São Luís with 4.9 days, Codó with 3.7 days, and Chapadinha with 3.1 days. This research shows that to reduce complications and hospitalizations, it is necessary to implement continuous improvements in the monitoring of these patients, with an emphasis on screening and early treatment of SAH. Furthermore, it is essential to strengthen health education and patient awareness regarding self-care to promote more effective adherence to treatment and healthy lifestyle habits, minimizing risks and promoting a better quality of life.
