Abstract: Nursing management in public hospitals is fundamental to guaranteeing the quality of care in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). This descriptive and exploratory study, based on a literature review, analyzes its impacts on patient care, considering structural, organizational, and human challenges. The results indicate that efficient management, supported by leadership, strategic planning, effective communication, and quality tools, contributes to the reduction of adverse events, greater patient safety, team satisfaction, and better use of resources. Hospitals that invest in the managerial training of nurses show better care indicators, a positive organizational climate, and greater multi-professional engagement. However, obstacles such as work overload, inadequate staffing levels, and gaps in managerial training persist. It is concluded that strengthening the administrative and leadership competencies of nurses is essential to promote safe, humanized, and efficient care in the SUS.
